What is Gold Leafing?

Gold leafing is a way of decorating glass that creates an expensive looking mirrored glass effect. Gold Leaf is created from extremely thin, beaten sheets of, usually, 22 karat gold; though it can be found in a variety of shades and karats. The process of gold leafing glass is known as Verre Eglomise which refers to the design and gilding of the rear face of glass which in turn results in a mirrored finish.

The technique of applying gold leaf to glass is an ancient practice that has its roots in Pre-Roman eras where gold was used to decorate altars and reliquaries. It has since been used throughout Europe to decorate drinking vessels, jewellery and in more recent times, as window signs and advertising statement glazing. It is commonplace to see house numbers or business signs created through this technique to add a touch of affluence and sophistication to your glazing.

The process of gilding glass involves fixing the gold leaf using a gelatine based adhesive which, once steamed, will result in a perfectly mirrored, reflective finish. A design will be painted on the reverse prior to the gilding, though more complex designs will require the painting to occur after the gilding has occurred. Black is commonly used to back the gold leaf as it will create a greater contrast and really highlight the lustre of the gold leaf itself. Golf leaf is a very fragile material; the upmost care must be taken when handling and the correct tools are needed for its care and application.

The art of Verre Eglomise, or Glass Gilding, is a time consuming process that requires great patience, a steady hand and an eye for detail. Yet the end result is entirely worth it; the finished look gives of a regal and refined aesthetic that not too long ago was only available to royalty or aristocracy.
