Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: How to go about Commissioning a Bespoke/Decorative Mirror

Are you in the market for a custom mirror for your home? Looking for that unique piece to bind a room together? The perfect mirror can create space, adding light and warmth to your home, and serve as a focal point to match your style and aesthetic within a room. Here at Glacien Glass we work with you; the client, to create a truly personalised mirror, tailored to your exact specifications.

Some things to consider when commissioning a bespoke mirror with us are sizing, design, budget and placement. How do you want your design to translate to final finish? How big or small, tall or wide do you want your mirror? How much do you anticipate spending on your custom mirror? Where in the room will you be placing the mirror?

Provisionally placing your mirror is the most important step; as this will set the tone for the sizing and design of the final product. Where the mirror sits, stands or is hung will dictate these fundamental criteria. Tall and slender mirrors, for example, work best on taller and less cluttered walls whereas wide and broad mirrors make great additions to the space above a fireplace. In reverse, the positioning of these mirrors can be inappropriate for the space they inhabit.

The design of the mirror is, of course, the biggest factor to consider! If you have a design in mind, a preliminary sketch or outline is useful to help us get a better understanding of your vision. Alternatively, we can create a design on your behalf based on suggestions or ideas. Pinterest is a great tool for finding an image that we can base a new design on. Whether you have the design finalised or require some help in that regard, no work will begin until you are 100% satisfied with how your bespoke mirror will look. Our team are highly skilled artists and will walk you through every stage of the process to ensure your vision is fulfilled to your exact requirements.

The size and finish of your mirror will affect the budget. Finishing touches such as gold leafing, sandblasting and acid etching are all things to consider when planning the design of your mirror, so long as you factor in the cost associated with each. We will provide quotes on all finishes and can make recommendations and suggest alternatives based on what you have to spend.  Make sure that you’re aware of any additional costs before agreeing to commission the work, such as delivery and installation fees, framing and any extra costs for materials that have been specially ordered in for you.
